Compensation
Including incentives, officers can earn up to $124,068 annually. In addition to that, officers can earn an extra 5% premium pay for certain qualifying specialties. (As of 2024)
Officers can earn up to 105.2K annually in base wages, plus Holiday pay, Specialty pay, Retention pay, Education pay, and Extra Duty pay.
Premium/Corporal Pay – 5%
Retention Pay – 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%
Education Pay - 2% AA, 4% BA
Sergeants earn up to an additional 18% over top-step patrol pay.

Application and Interview
Each entry level candidate initially applies through Public Safety Testing for a written & physical fitness test. Scores are then sent to the department's recruiter to set up in person interviews (oral boards).
Officers with previous law enforcement experience or who have successfully graduated from a recognized police academy can apply here.
The Academy
Once a recruit passes the application process, they must complete the WA State Criminal Justice Training Center Basic or Equivalency Academy for out of state lateral applicants.
Background Investigation
Complete background check process, including chief’s interview, polygraph, psychological, drug screening, and medical exam will be required of selected candidates being considered for hire.
Field Training Program
Successful candidates must complete the Field Training Program at MPD under an experienced officer for 12 –16 weeks.
Candidate Disqualifiers

Been convicted of a felony (or pled nolo contendere to a felony charge) or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Washington state or has been incarcerated for any crime.
Sold narcotics or dangerous drugs.
All illegal drug use will be closely scrutinized on a case-by-case basis.
Had a pattern of abusing prescription medication.
Reckless driving violation within the preceding 5 years, or driving while license suspended within the preceding 5 years, or driving while intoxicated within the preceding five years.
Been involved in more than one motor vehicle accident within the preceding 3 years for which the applicant received a traffic or criminal citation and was convicted, forfeited bail, or entered a plea of "guilty" or "nolo contendere."
Committed any serious violation of Federal, State, City or County laws.
Lied during any stage of the hiring process.
Falsified his or her personal history questionnaire or application or failed to disclose pertinent information.
Been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statute.
Unlawful sexual misconduct.
Failure to meet the standards as determined by the department psychologist (written and oral interview).
Failure to meet the standards for the position as determined by medical examination.

Alcohol or substance misuse and/or abuse.
Excessive traffic violations.
Commission of a felony.
A demonstrated unwillingness to honor fiscal contracts or just debts.
Any other conduct or pattern of conduct that would tend to disrupt, diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession.
An inability to perform the essential functions of a Police Officer.
Been previously employed as a law enforcement agent and since violated federal, state, or city criminal activity laws.
